Art-Sea Nov 14th @ Vancouver Aquarium (my photos will be hanging)

"Art-Sea" will be held on November 14, 2009 and the one and only Vancouver Aquarium. In addition to a fantastic venue, I have hand selected 30 artists who will show and sell over 250 pieces of unique artwork ranging in mediums from acrylic, oil, collage, to photography. Each artist will be present and more than happy to answer any questions or help you pick out that perfect piece just in time for the Christmas season. Further, we have organized a silent auction, walking art, music, hors d'oeuvres, and bar service. This should be one of the best art showcases in town and just to add that cherry on top, we are donating partial proceeds to a great organization; The ArtsUmbrella. This spectacular group of people helps offer arts programs to underpriviledged children in the lower mainland. How could you not feel good about attending or buying some art? Everyone wins.

So, if you aren't busy on November 14, grab a ticket from Clubzone.com and make an appearance at "Art~Sea." The turtles, dolphins, seahorses, and sharks will surely appreciate it!

See you there!

Martin Creed Art Installation

Art collector and real estate marketing mogul Bob Rennie commissioned artist Martin Creed to install his artwork on the side of The Wing Sang Building in Chinatown (Chinatown’s oldest building), as part of it’s restoration project. “Everything is going to be alright” is Rennie’s philosophy for the 2010 Games and the Downtown Eastside.

princess (& friends)

princess (& friends), originally uploaded by edwardolive ...

I love all of Edwards photos. I found him when i was looking for images taken with Haselblad camera's and his came up. He is so inspiring to me because he captures the female form in all it's acts, in beauty, prostitution, in poses, and in weddings. I love the fuzziness he creates sometimes, and the colours in natural lighting. His distaste for weddings is humurous, and largely from obviously not being able to shoot what he wants and shooting the same photos over and over again to make some money, and getting incredibly bored by it. I find it stimulating, and an amazing work.

What is art?

In 1973, after 17 stateless years, Christo became a United States citizen. In 1972, Christo and Jeanne-Claude began preparations for Running Fence: a fabric fence, made from steel posts and steel cables, running through the landscape and leading into the sea. The fence was to be 5.5 meters high and 40 kilometers long. For the project, 59 families of "ranchers" needed to be convinced and the permission of the authorities had to be obtained, so Christo and Jeanne-Claude hired nine lawyers. At the end of 1973 Christo and Jeanne-Claude marked the path of the fence with wooden stakes. On 29 April 1976 the work finally began after a long struggle against bureaucracy. Approximately 200,000 m2 of nylon fabric, 2050 steel posts and 145 km of steel cable were needed. On 10 September 1976 the work was completed. However, Christo and Jeanne-Claude had to pay a $60,000 fine, because they lacked permission for the coastal region.

I love how heated people get over what art is, and in that sense it becomes successful. I am just studying this for my final exam and have come across this documentary and find it fascinating.

Formalism

In art theory, formalism is the concept that a work's artistic value is entirely determined by its form--the way it is made, its purely visual aspects, and its medium. Formalism emphasizes compositional elements such as color, line, shape and texture rather than realism, context, and content. In visual art, formalism is the concept that everything necessary in a work of art is contained within it. The context for the work, including the reason for its creation, the historical background, and the life of the artist, is considered to be of secondary importance. Formalism plays a part in evaluating art.

Earth artist Andy Goldsworthy

I really didn't know much about Earth Art until it was a topic in my Modern Art History Class. We got to watch this documentary Rivers and Tides and i found it so utterly inspiring, it gave me goose bumps. To create art solely out of objects in nature and doing no damage to the surrounding.. even if it's to capture that image for one second or breath.. so utterly brilliant. This doc captures his spirit and his inspiring work.

Beautiful Losers

I have not seen this but i really want to see it now

If anyone knows where i can see this please let me know!

The Slave Market

Jean Leon Gerome’s The Slave Market of 1867 appears to capture a European female nude getting inspected in an African Slave Market. It was during this time period slaves were sold at markets in Northern Africa. Gerome’s opens our eyes to a practice that was seen to be part of the culture of the Orient but gives it a European pornographic edge. His genre paintings combine the real (the market) and unreal (the nude). This painting reveals more about Europe at this time than a true depiction of life in North Africa.
